New DSV hybrid is highest yielding mainstream variety in RL

DSV’s new hybrid oilseed rape Popular is the highest-yielding mainstream variety in the 2015/16 HGCA Recommended List.

Just pipped to top spot by the HOLL variety V316 OL, from the Vistive breeding programme of DSV and Monsanto, Popular has a gross output of 107.4% of control, 46.0% oil content and scores 8 for both lodging resistance and stem stiffness.

Popular follows a long tradition of extremely consistent, high yielding hybrid varieties with strong agronomic properties, says DSV UK’s Sarah Hawthorne.

“Popular is probably the most well-rounded variety we have produced to date and its name conveys what we believe will be its universal appeal to UK producers.

“Like incentive, which topped both Northern and East/West HGCA Recommended lists last year, Popular shows particularly strong early vigour producing 4-5 leaves very quickly to give a ground-hugging plant with great ground cover.”

The variety’s all round capability, especially in the critical few weeks after drilling, make it the perfect choice for mitigating against early pest and disease threat and creating high yields and oil contents, she says.

“The majority of an oilseed rape’s performance is governed by its roots and early growth so our priorities have been a strong tap root, loads of ‘get up and go’ and the right combination of properties to help it weather UK growing conditions.

“Popular’s 6 for light leaf spot and 5 for stem canker means it is ideally suited to routine fungicide programs with no particular concerns over any of the major diseases.

“All in all, it’s the perfect partner to Incentive 45, which is now showing the highest average yield over the last four years of all current RL varieties, and is a variety which we expect to have a great future.”

According to Openfield national seed manager Lee Bennett Popular is an outstanding variety with broad appeal.

“Popular is a natural successor to Incentive and will appeal to all growers. Its excellent yield potential is matched by an equally high oil content – something which DSV varieties have become renowned for – and Popular continues this trend.

The variety’s 6 for light leaf spot suggests it has robust resistance to what is becoming the most costly foliar disease of oilseed rape in the UK, he adds.

“Its excellent agronomic scores, high yield and oil content levels and a mid-maturity rating suggest it will quickly establish itself as one of the leading hybrid varieties with growers.”

NIAB TAG oilseeds and pulses specialist Simon Kightley says Popular is the best of the new mainstream hybrid varieties on the list this year.

“It’s a very promising variety with good standing ability and a high oil content which will make it the first choice for a lot of growers. The marginally higher yielding HOLL variety V316 OL may not have the same universal appeal particularly with regard to its fit in rotations and availability of contracts.

“DSV’s variety Incentive is still the benchmark for other hybrids and is the one which is showing real resistance to Verticillium Wilt in our trials so it will be interesting to see how much of these characteristics Popular shares when it is in the field.”
