The West Midlands’ premier arable farming event will include a focus on the latest spraying technology when it returns this year.

The Arable Event, to be held on the Shropshire and Staffordshire border on June 20, has become a firm fixture in the calendar, attracting more than 1,200 attendees in 2017.

Now in its fifth year, the event will have a major focus on spraying technology, with working demonstrations of some of the newest equipment available.

RVW Pugh will bring the Fendt Rogator 600 self-propelled sprayer; Rea Valley Tractors will have the John Deere R4050i self-propelled machine; Battlefield Machinery is bringing the Kverneland iXtrack T3 trailed sprayer; Edwards and Farmer will have an example of the latest self-propelled Househam sprayers.

The demo spraying will take place on the extensive trial plots which will also be a key feature of the day, with guided tours by agronomists and other specialists, allowing farmers and landowners to see which are the most successful current varieties.

The trials, run by Syngenta, include winter wheat, winter barley, oilseed rape, soya and winter triticale. Also this year will be plots of cover crops, as both individual species and mixtures, including oilseed radish, phacelia, barseem clover, black oats, white mustard, brown mustard, vetch and forage rye.

There will also be the return of the soil trench, with specialist Mark Tripney, who will be discussing the benefits and implications of soil health for the farm, linking the chemistry, physics and biology.

The Arable Event is free to attend. It is organised by Wynnstay and GrainLink and takes place at Woodlands Farm, Weston-under-Lizard.

Event manager, Kelly Dolphin, said: “The 2018 event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The very popular trial plots are more extensive, with oilseed rape and cover crops added in this year, the soil trench is an extremely informative feature and the sprayer demonstrations are bound to be popular, bringing together leading manufacturer’s equipment in one place to be seen in action.

“There will also be the usual discussions and presentations relevant to the sector in the marquee, which have proved to be both useful and fascinating in previous years, as well as the moisture meter clinic and many trade exhibitors.”

Entry is free, as are refreshments throughout the day, though advanced registration is highly recommended via the website at www.thearableevent.co.uk
