Harvest approaches for sugar beet seed

While UK oilseed rape and barley growers are preparing for an early harvest, in France and Italy where SESVanderhave’s sugar beet seed is produced it’s looking like a more normal middle August start.

“Seed quality looks excellent and flowering timings have matched well to produce our hybrids,” says Emilie Lannoy, Technical Director of SESVanderhave’s breeding & research centre in South West France.

“We have a considerable area of production destined for the UK again this year, in response to high demand for our varieties which provide 5 out of the top 6 varieties in the UK, and the top nematode tolerant variety.”

Ms Lannoy further comments: “Continual monitoring of our seed crops by our own fieldsman and our established growers ensures nothing is left to chance.”

Seed production is just one step in the journey to deliver seed for the UK’s 2015 sugar beet crop. The seed will be subject to extensive testing and bolting checks following harvest, to ensure only the best is delivered to UK growers.
