News that the Government has asked the Queen to suspend Parliament in September to prevent MPs blocking an October 31 no deal Brexit has sent shockwaves through politics – and beyond, including within agriculture.
With a no deal now a very real possibility, in this latest issue of Farm Business, assesses the latest political situation (pages 1 and 2), including looking at the real implications behind Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s controversial Melton Mowbray pork pie comments at the G7 summit. Farm Business also looks at what various recently-published reports conclude about the impact of a no deal for the agriculture.
In an excellent article on page 4, ‘Farmer Tom’ talks about some of marginal gains made on his arable farm – and why more farmers should engage with an innovative project helping the industry connect with the consumers of the future.
AHDB’s David Eudall provides a useful harvest update including forecasts of a bumper year for wheat, but a very bumpy ride for OSR.
And on page 8, Michael Wale features a farmer looking to find outlets in China for the lavender he grows on the Surrey Downs. ‘Heaven scent’ – unlike the current political situation.
