Straightforward septoria advice available online

A new cereal disease guide, which outlines the fungicide options available for the effective management of septoria, has been launched by Adama Agricultural Solutions UK as part of its remit to provide simple and effective crop protection advice to UK arable farmers.

The online guide – available at www.adamadigital.co.uk/septoria/index.html – provides growers with an easy to follow summary of the septoria disease cycle and outlines how best to tackle the disease. In doing so, it helps to unravel some of the main complications and misunderstandings surrounding the control of septoria in cereal crops, and provides best practice advice for how to manage the disease now and in the future.

With septoria fungicide resistance becoming an increasingly common constraint on disease management, future crop protection strategies need careful planning to provide effective disease prevention and to combat the threat of increasing resistance.

Choosing the right chemicals to partner each other within spray mixtures, avoiding the repeated use of single modes of action, and applying treatments at appropriate timings are therefore key challenges for arable farmers.

The Adama septoria disease guide is therefore designed to help farmers get a better understanding of the modes of action available to provide effective preventative control, and pays special attention to the benefits of switching to robust, early preventative treatments rather than relying on the later application of curative products.

The guide is split into three main sections; the septoria disease cycle, control strategies, and managing the disease in the future, and uses a series of videos and diagrams to illustrate the key messages.

Within the latter section, the guide explains the benefits of building a fungicide strategy based on a multi-site fungicide (e.g. folpet) in conjunction with azole and SDHI chemistries. The guide also explains why multi-site chemicals are vital in the fight against further resistance to fungicides and how they can increase the lifespan of threatened single site actives.
