This year will see BASIS celebrate the qualification of its 6,000th professional register member as well as the organisation’s 45th birthday.

BASIS, which was established in 1978, offers training, events and qualifications in the agriculture, horticulture and amenity pesticide sectors.

Chairman of the scheme, William Burgess, said: “The BASIS team is very proud to be supporting agronomists and land managers to achieve excellence and to keep up with the ever-changing demands placed on them in a time of such fast-pace change.

“We work hard to raise professional standards across land management and food production by supporting people and businesses with our industry leading qualifications, professional registers and auditing schemes over the past 45 years.’’

6,000th member

Suffolk-based young farmer, Harry Goring, has become the 6,000th member to join the BASIS professional register having taken his crop protection management qualification this year.

Mr Goring, who is currently an assistant farm manager in Wiltshire, said the qualification is vital to his ongoing career: “It was a great experience; I learned a lot and I feel it’s really important to have gained this knowledge. As an assistant farm manager, for me to understand and evaluate the information agronomists share with me helps so much when it comes to decision making.

“During my preparation for the qualification I gained a lot of experience from crop walking with the Velcourt agronomists as well as Debbie Wedged at Landbased Training. I would like to give special recognition to Debbie who was outstanding in training us”
