Water quality crucial for glyphosate efficacy

With glyphosate best practice now essential following the confirmation of Italian ryegrass resistance, De Sangosse used Cereals to demonstrate the diluting effects of hard water.

On show were pots of Italian ryegrass plants treated with an equivalent to 3 litres/ha of Roundup 360 applied with de-ionised water and hard water (650ppm) with water conditioner X-Change and without

It revealed that for those who farm in hard water areas, the efficacy of glyphosate fell sharply. “We’re seeing a 30 – 40% reduction in efficacy,” said Rob Suckling.

When 0.45% of the water conditioner was added to the mixture, efficacy was restored to that of the de-ionised application.

The loss of efficacy is down to calcium and magnesium binding with the active, reducing its movement through the plant and therefore the loss of efficacy.

The company also used the event to launch a guide, compiled with the assistance of weed expert John Cussans. It offers advice on how to optimise glyphosate performance and maintain stewardship best practice.
