Newly recommended wheat varieties, Elicit and Elation, confirm Elsoms as a major player in the wheat market. The AHDB’s new Recommended and Descriptive Lists, released this week, showcases a wider and increasingly impressive arable portfolio from Elsoms and partners, Saaten Union.

Elsoms, the UK’s leading seed specialist and a successful innovator in seed technology and breeding research, has delivered two newly recommended wheat varieties, bred specifically for the UK market, Elicit and Elation. Elicit has attracted strong support from UK seed merchants and is a recommended Group 3 biscuit wheat, combining high yields with excellent all-round disease resistance, especially for Septoria tritici. Paul Taylor at Agrii commented, “we’ve been waiting for a Group 3 with Elicit’s characteristics for close to a decade now.” Elation is a recommend Group 4 soft with excellent potential for distilling and export, and is a high yielding variety with a particularly strong resistance to yellow rust. “A key factor for Elation is its positive score for distilling, this is rare in the Group 4 softs. We see it as a complementary sister to Elicit”, said Rodger Shirreff at Agrii.

With an impressive range of wheat, barley, oats, oilseed rape, linseed varieties and a market leading hybrid rye and hybrid wheat programme, Elsoms, in partnership with Saaten Union are now able to provide UK growers with an outstanding portfolio of arable varieties.

“The announcement of the new AHDB Recommended and Descriptive Lists has been a game changer for Elsoms and Saaten Union”, commented Adrian Hayler, Head of Elsoms Agricultural Business. “We have been delighted by the support we have received from across the agricultural sector as our arable business has grown over the last few years, spearheaded by the widespread popularity of Elgar Oilseed Rape and the formation of joint venture breeding programmes, Elsoms Wheat Ltd, Elsoms Ackerman Barley along with Saaten Union’s impressive Hybrid Rye and Hybrid Wheat portfolio’s,” said Adrian. “Our two newly recommended wheats Elicit and Elation have attracted very strong demand from merchants to enable them to supply farmer demand in 2018 while we now also have strong positions in the barley, oat, oilseed rape, linseed, hybrid rye and triticale AHDB lists,” concluded Adrian.
