‘Unique’ bacillus seed treatment launched

A bacillus-based seed treatment has been launched in time for next season.

Manufacturer Fielder Nutrition says seed treatment Surge is one of the first products to combine biologicals and micronutrients, the synergy between them giving crops a head start and the nutritional boost to enhance growth.

The three strains of elite UK-grown Bacillus have been proven to support root development, not only through enhancing nutrient uptake and triggering plant stress mechanisms but also by promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), with root development further enhanced by the manganese-based micronutrient blend.

Director Robert Hawkin describes Surge as ‘unique’ among seed treatments. “We see a symbiotic effect that isn’t seen in other seed treatments, which drives germination and seedling growth. Crops are better able to access nutrients and water in the soil through bigger roots.”

UK independent trials have shown mean yield increases of 5% for the last five seasons across a range of crops, higher in stressed situations such as drought.

The product has also been shown to trigger plant defence mechanisms. Winter wheat trials in partnership with the University of Nottingham have shown a 50% reduction in yellow rust and fusarium infection 20 days after application compared to untreated controls.

The research demonstrated bacillus strains can stimulate signaling pathways in plants, releasing defence-related protein compounds.

Robert says Surge is well suited to those looking for sustainable solutions, releasing phosphorus in the soil and fixing nitrogen but notes it can be combined with conventional seed treatments. “We see no antagonism with fungicide or nutrition-based products.”

Surge will be available via a range of merchants and distributors, those wanting more information are advised to consult with company representatives.
