Second harvest update shows no yield improvement

As harvest has progressed, the AHDB’s second harvest update shows similar results to the first.

The UK winter wheat average remains below 7.0 t/ha at 6.7 t/ha, down on last season and over 1.0 t/ha against the ten-year average.

As the harvest has moved further north, the speed of progress has slowed due to wet weather in Scotland and northern England. This has coincided with a rise in crop moisture levels but yields remain disappointing. With 85% of harvest now estimated to be complete, yields range from 3.9 t/ha to 11.5 t/ha, reflecting another season where rainfall has been limited since spring.

Winter barley yields appear to be broadly in line with the five-year average, although results have varied considerably between farms and regions. An average of 6.8 t/ha is just below the ten-year mean. With harvest 98% complete, this is unlikely to change.

The spring barley harvest isn’t so advanced but again yields are disappointing. The estimated UK average is just 4.1 t/ha.

The only bright spot is winter OSR. The UK 2026 mean is unchanged at 3.9 t/ha, 0.4 above the 10-year historic average.
